Noopept Guide

Noopept is a bitter tasting, white, powdery nootropic compound which is known primarily for it’s ability to increase verbal fluidity, and reduce anxiety. Noopept, aka N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester was first developed in Russia as a prescription medication to treat neurological disorders. [1. Synthesis and antiamnesic activity of a series of N-acylprolyl-containing dipeptides] [2. Anxiolytic activity of endogenous nootropic dipeptide cycloprolylglycine in elevated plus-maze test. Bull Exp Biol Med. 2001 May;131(5):464-6.]

In the US and elsewhere Noopept is sold legally as a nootropic supplement.

Noopept is not technically a racetam as it lacks a 2-oxo-pyrollidine skeleton, but is generally grouped in the same family due to it’s similar mechanisms of action. It is often compared to Piracetam due to them having a similar effects profile.[3. A comparative study of noopept and piracetam in the treatment of mild and re

derate cognitive impairment in patients with organic brain diseases of vascular and traumatic origin. Zh Nevrol Psikhiatr Im S S Korsakova. 2008;108(3):33-42.] [4. Neurosci Behav Physiol. 2009 Mar;39(3):311-21. doi: 10.1007/s11055-009-9128-4.]

Noopept is commonly thought to be around 1000x as potent as Piracetam, thus the doses needed to achieve the same effects are much lower. [6. The original novel nootropic and neuroprotective agent noopept. Eksp Klin Farmakol. 2002 Sep-Oct;65(5):66-72.] Some research disagrees with this, and states that the exact number is variable. [7. Epub 2011 Oct 1.] Either way, Noopept is far more potent by weight than Piracetam is. One of the main similarities between these two substances is that they display similar EEG patterns.[5. Effects of nootropics on the EEG in conscious rats and their modification by glutamatergic inhibitors. Brain Res Bull. 2011 May 30;85(3-4):123-32. doi: 10.1016/j.brainresbull.2011.02.011. Epub 2011 Mar 15.] EEG, or electroencephalogram tests, are tests which which use small electrodes attached to your scalp to measure brain activity. These tests create a wavy pattern on the EEG recording which can be studied

Although no studies have been conducted which prove that Noopept can benefit those without neurological issues, many people anecdotally report that they gain positive subjects benefits from supplementing with it.

A study conducted in 2008 demonstrated that Noopept increases both NGF and BDNF, two hormones which are both responsible for the growth of new brain cells, and the protection of old ones.[8. Noopept stimulates the expression of NGF and BDNF in rat hippocampus. Bull Exp Biol Med. 2008 Sep;146(3):334-7.]

There is some evidence that these increases lead Noopept to have  a beneficial long term effect on memory[9. From acquisition to consolidation: on the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling in hippocampal-dependent learning.] [11. Despite this, many people have reported anecdotally that Noopept supplementation has a negative effect on their short term memory. In most cases this can be easily avoided by simply accurately measuring out low doses. Lower down in this article I explain how to make a solution for volumetrically dosing Noopept which will show you how to do that. In the cases where individuals experience short term memory loss from Noopept, the effects are not permanent, and dissipate when Noopept is abstained from.

Noopept has been shown in 2 studies to have anti depressive effects in rats[1. Effect of noopept and afobazole on the development of neurosis of learned helplessness in rats. Bull Exp Biol Med. 2003 Aug;136(2):162-4.] [1. Studies of long-term noopept and afobazol treatment in rats with learned helplessness neurosis. Bull Exp Biol Med. 2006 Aug;142(2):202-4.]

One of the main reported benefits of Noopept when taken by healthy adults is it’s frequently reported anti-anxiety effects. These effects have also been shown to exist in multiple studies[1. Novel nootropic dipeptide Noopept increases inhibitory synaptic transmission in CA1 pyramidal cells. Neurosci Lett. 2010 May 31;476(2):70-3. doi: 10.1016/j.neulet.2010.04.005. Epub 2010 Apr 9.] [1. Noopept and Dementia

Noopept has been shown to increase fibril β-sheet formation of α-synuclein. The creation of β-sheet formations are more protective and less neurotoxic than other formations.[1. Alpha-synuclein misfolding and neurodegenerative diseases. Curr Protein Pept Sci. 2008 Oct;9(5):507-40.] [1. Cytotoxicity of albebetin oligomers depends on cross-beta-sheet formation. FEBS Lett. 2006 May 1;580(10):2451-7. Epub 2006 Apr 7.]  [1. Does the cytotoxic effect of transient amyloid oligomers from common equine lysozyme in vitro imply innate amyloid toxicity? Noopept also creates longer formations of fibrils. Shorter fibril formations have been shown cause cell death. This means that it exhibits anti-Alzheimers qualities.

No studies have been conducted on the safety of taking Noopept over long periods of time, but multiple studies have shown that it appears to be non-toxic, and neuro-protective, so it is highly likely to be completely benign and beneficial.[1. You are not guaranteed to gain any of the positive effects described here, but if some of them seem like they could benefit you, you should considering testing some Noopept to see how it works for you. When I was just starting out with nootropics I made an order of a small amount of a few different ones. This costed me about $50 upfront, but it immediately showed me which nootropics benefit me, and which do not. Just from doing this I learned that Noopept gives me very positive effects, and Oxiracetam makes me angry and uncomfortable. You could have the opposite experience, and the only way to know is to test them both.

The way in which a given nootropic will effect you is completely dependent on your own individual neurochemistry, so there is no way to know which effects you will get without first trying them. If you plan on making an order of this sort, I buy all of my nootropics from Peak Nootropics

Noopept Dosage

Noopept is roughly 1000x as potent as Piracetam. Given this fact a standard dose of Noopept is 10-30mg, whereas a standard dose of Piracetam is 2000-4000mg.

A tolerance does develop to the acute effects of Noopept, but due to the nature of how it builds up in your system, the overall effects grow over time. This means that you do not have to increase your dosage over time, and will continue to get positive effects.

Given the incredibly small amount required for beneficial effects, measuring your dosage for Noopept accurately can be tricky.

Most sellers will include a micro-scoop which measures 10 milligrams at a time. This is far better than weighing Noopept directly, but due to the high level of accuracy required, is still not completely accurate. Many of the negative side effects which some people report getting from Noopept are due to them taking inaccurate dosages, and the difficulty of weighing substances in the 10-20 milligram range.

If you have the necessary materials, I highly recommend that you make a solution which you can volumetrically dose.

What you need

•A mini scale

•Propolene glycol

•A small squirty bottle thingamajig that has a 1 milliliter mark on the dropper

First you weight out whatever amount of Noopept you plan on using (I suggest you use over 500mg), and add it to your squirty bottle thingamajig. Next you measure out 1 milliliter of propylene glycol for each 10mg of Noopept used, and also add it to your trusty squirty bottle thingamajig.

You put the cap on the bottle, and give it a light shake. Noopept is highly soluble in propylene glycol, so it will dissolve easily.

Now you have a solution where a 1 milliliter drop from your bottle contains 10mg of Noopept. This method of measurement is far more accurate than measuring using a microscoop, and is more convenient as well. This solution can be administered in any of the same ways as the powder.

Routes of Administration

Noopept can be taken in one of 4 ways

1. Orally

This is the most common method of administration, but is also the least effective one. The main benefit here is that you can mix your powder in with some water or juice, and you don’t have to deal with it’s nasty chemical taste.

2. Sublingually

This is the next most common method of administration, and is also the best one in my opinion.

Noopept taken sublingually is around 3 times as potent as when taken orally, so you need far less to achieve the same effects.

The main problem with this method is the bitter, chemically taste of Noopept when dissolving under your tongue. Given the  minute dosage size it is a relatively small amount of powder or liquid, but the taste can still be quite strong for some.

3. Nasally

This route of administration has about the same efficiency as sublingually.

Snorting Noopept is uncomfortable, and it’s only benefit over sublingual administration is making you look cool.

I only recommend using this method if you have a $100 bill to snort it with. Now that’s badass.

Combinations

Choline

If you supplement with Noopept, choline is a must.

Noopept increases the levels of acetylcholine in the brain, and choline is needed as a building block to acetylcholine.

If you fail to use choline with Noopept, you may end up with choline fatigue, which leads to headaches, lethargy, and brain fog.

Be like the cool kids, take choline with your Noopept.

L-Theanine

I personally find this stack to be very good.

Noopept gives me wonderful effects, but sometimes it does slightly overstimulate me. Having some L-Theanine with it chills me out enough to relax and get work done, rather than bouncing off the walls.

Racetams

This is another great combo.

Racetams are highly variable in their effects from person to person, so which one(s) to use here really depends on which one(s) work best for you.

So far I’ve only tried this with Aniracetam, and it works wonderfully for me.

My first dosage of Noopept was 20 mg taken orally, combined with 600mg of choline.

My Experience

I remember being surprised at how strong the acute effects were the first time that I took Noopept.

This dosage caused a noticeable mood lift, and made me far more social than I normally am. I also found 20mg of Noopept to be a bit too stimulation for me. The benefits were very positive, but I found this to be a bit too stimulating for me, so I have since reduced my dosage to 10mg/day.

After using 10mg daily for a month I get much lowered acute effects compared to the first time I took Noopept. However, my overall mood and sociability has improved a lot, even on days when I don’t take Noopept. This can be attributed to the way that Noopept (like its racetam cousins) builds up in your system over time.

Since I have lowered my dosage to 10mg, I have noticed none of the memory loss which I experienced before. I still get the wonderful benefits of increased sociability, and lowered anxiety. All of this combined with it’s relatively low cost has turned Noopept into a permanent member of my nootropic cabinet.

Conclusion

Noopept has the potential to be a very useful nootropic. As with all nootropics, there is no way to know how Noopept will effect you without first trying it personally. If you feel that social anxiety is making your life worse than it could be, and you have $20 to spare, I recommend that you buy some Noopept. It’s not definitely going to be a cure for all of your problems, but there is a very good chance that you will see a substantial decrease in your anxiety from taking it.
